Following Jesus:
Why True Followers Never Lack, Never Toil, and Never Walk Alone
Felix Harcourt Ministries | Connecting People With Jesus Christ, Changing Lives
Introduction: The Secret to a Life Without Lack
One of the greatest revelations in Scripture is this: Eternal life is not just about heaven, it is about a life of divine supply, rest, and fruitfulness here and now through Jesus Christ. Many believers struggle, toil, and live under pressure, not because God designed life that way, but because they have not fully understood what it means to follow Jesus and live from Him.
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him (Colossians 2:6).
The truth is simple but powerful: Where Jesus leads, lack cannot follow. This is not motivational language; it is Kingdom reality. From Genesis to Revelation, we see a consistent pattern: Those who walk closely with God may face challenges, but they are never abandoned to scarcity, confusion, or fruitless labor.
1. Following Jesus Ends Toil, Scarcity, and Fruitless Labor
Before encountering Jesus, Peter and his partners were professional fishermen, skilled, experienced, and hardworking. Yet their success depended entirely on human effort. Then Jesus stepped into their world.
Matthew 4:19 (NIV)“Come, follow me… and I will send you out to fish for people.”
That invitation was more than a call; it was a transition: From effort to grace. From toil to results, from limitation to supernatural supply. They had already seen what Jesus could do: He produced where they had failed. He filled nets that they could not fill. That is why they followed immediately.
Kingdom Insight: When Jesus becomes your source, your effort is no longer your supply; His presence is.
2. True Followers Never Lack. Jesus Confirmed It.
Peter once asked a question many people still ask today:
“We have left everything to follow you. What will we gain?” (Matthew 19:27)
Jesus did not rebuke him. He answered with assurance: There is a reward in following. There is an increase in surrender. There is both present and eternal return.
Then Jesus gave undeniable evidence:
Luke 22:35 (NIV) “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered.
What did they lack? Not food. Not shelter. Not direction. Not provision. No purpose.
Kingdom Principle: Where Jesus sends you, He sustains you.
3. Struggle Returns When Fellowship Is Lost: After the resurrection, before fully reconnecting in fellowship, the disciples went back to fishing. The result?
John 21:3 “That night they caught nothing.”
This is not a coincidence; it is a revelation. They returned to: Old methods. Old systems. Self-dependence
And the outcome was emptiness.
But when Jesus appeared:
- He gave instruction
- Their nets overflowed
- Provision was already waiting
John 21:9 — Jesus already had fish on the fire.
Two Eternal Truths:
- Toil begins where fellowship ends.
- Supply begins where surrender starts.
4. Jesus Calls You Into Rest, Not Stress
Jesus never designed Christianity to be stressful.
Matthew 11:28–30 (NIV)
“Come to me… and I will give you rest.”
Pressure flows from relationships; do not drive the Kingdom life.
Where Jesus leads, there is:
- Rest instead of anxiety
- Peace instead of confusion
- Grace instead of struggle
- Results instead of frustration
Reality Check:
If your walk with God feels like a constant strain, you may be working for Him instead of walking with Him.
5. Jesus the Good Shepherd: Your Responsibility vs His
John 10:11 — “I am the good shepherd.”
A shepherd’s responsibility:
- Provide
- Protect
- Guide
A sheep’s responsibility:
- Follow
Psalm 23:1 — “The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing.”
Kingdom Simplicity:
You don’t supply for yourself.
You don’t protect yourself.
You don’t lead yourself.
You follow, and he handles the rest.
6. Abiding in Jesus Guarantees Fruitfulness
John 15:5 (NIV)
“If you remain in me… You will bear much fruit.”
Fruitfulness is not forced; it is natural when connected.
Connection produces:
- Growth
- Clarity
- Strength
- Results
Disconnection produces:
- Dryness
- Confusion
- Frustration
- Failure
Key Truth:
You don’t produce fruit by trying hard; you produce fruit by staying connected.
7. Jesus Never Changes—So His Provision Never Changes
Hebrews 13:8 — “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
If He provided then:
- He still provides now
- He still heals
- He still leads
- He still supplies
Faith Anchor:
Your confidence is not in circumstances, it is in the unchanging nature of Jesus Christ.
Five Disadvantages of Disconnecting from Jesus
- Fruitless Toil — Effort without results (John 21:3)
- Confusion — No clear direction (Proverbs 3:5–6)
- Fear and Anxiety — Absence of peace (John 20:19)
- Spiritual Weakness — Loss of strength (John 15:5)
- Vulnerability — Exposure to attacks (1 Peter 5:8)
Five Benefits of Following Jesus
- Abundant Provision — Psalm 23:1
- Divine Rest — Matthew 11:28
- Consistent Fruitfulness — John 15:5
- Guidance and Wisdom — John 10:4
- Supernatural Protection — John 10:28
The “Cost” of Walking With Jesus (Not Payment, but Partnership)
Jesus already paid the price.
What remains is participation in His life through spiritual growth.
These are not things you beg God for; they are realities you grow in:
- Faith — Hebrews 11:6
- Trust — Proverbs 3:5
- Patience — James 1:4
- Belief — Mark 9:23
- Love — John 13:34
- Joy — John 15:11
Kingdom Insight:
These are not burdens. They are evidence of a life connected to Christ.
Final Word: It Pays to Follow Jesus
Peter discovered what every believer must eventually learn:
Life with Jesus is always better than life without Him.
When you truly follow Jesus:
- You don’t lack
- You don’t struggle in vain
- You don’t live confused
- You don’t walk alone
- You don’t fear tomorrow
- You don’t miss your purpose
Jesus is still:
- The Good Shepherd
- The True Vine
- The Faithful Provider
- The Rest-Giver
- The Source of Eternal Life
Stay connected. Stay close. Stay following. Because in the Kingdom of God, it always pays to walk with Jesus.
