When Ye Fast, When Ye Pray, When Ye Give

Kingdom Practices That Shape the Heart, Not Performances That Impress People

By Felix Harcourt Ministries

In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus addresses three core spiritual disciplines that define authentic Kingdom living: fasting, prayer, and giving. What is striking is not only what He teaches, but how He teaches it. Jesus does not say “if you fast,” “if you pray,” or “if you give.” He says:

  • “When you fast…”
  • “When you pray…”
  • “When you give…”

This language is deliberate. Jesus assumes that these practices are not optional add-ons to the Christian life. They are normal, expected expressions of a life that is truly surrendered to God.

Yet, Jesus immediately confronts a danger that threatens all three: performance spirituality; doing spiritual things to be seen by people rather than to be known by God.

At Felix Harcourt Ministries, we believe that true spirituality flows from relationship, not religious performance. Fasting, prayer, and giving are not tools to manipulate God or impress people; they are pathways through which God transforms the heart.

Let us explore each of these Kingdom practices in depth, exactly as Jesus taught them.

1. When Ye Fast: Fasting That Refocuses the Heart

Matthew 6:16 CEB
“And when you fast, don’t put on a sad face like the hypocrites. They distort their faces so people will know they are fasting. I assure you that they have their reward.”

Fasting Is Expected, Not Exceptional

Jesus begins with “when you fast,” not “if.” This tells us that fasting is meant to be a regular part of a believer’s spiritual life. Throughout Scripture, fasting appears whenever God’s people desire deeper alignment with Him (Joel 2:12, Ezra 8:21, Acts 13:2–3).

Fasting is not a hunger strike to force God’s hand. It is a voluntary withdrawal from physical satisfaction to heighten spiritual sensitivity.

The Purpose of Fasting

Biblically, fasting serves several purposes:

  • To humble the soul before God (Psalm 35:13)
  • To sharpen spiritual focus (Daniel 10:2–3)
  • To subdue the flesh and elevate the spirit (Galatians 5:16–17)
  • To realign priorities (Matthew 4:4)

Fasting is not about what we stop eating; it is about what we start hearing.

Jesus Confronts Hypocrisy in Fasting

Jesus warns against fasting that is performed for visibility. The hypocrites disfigured their faces so others would know they were fasting. Jesus says plainly:

“They have their reward.”

Their reward was attention, nothing more.

At Felix Harcourt Ministries, we teach that fasting is a private devotion with public fruit, not a public display with empty results.

Fasting Disconnects Us from the World

Fasting creates intentional silence. It disconnects us from distractions and reconnects us to God’s voice.

Isaiah 58:6 NIV
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice…?”

True fasting produces inner transformation, not outward drama.

2. When Ye Pray: Prayer That Aligns, Not Performs

Matthew 6:7 CEB
“When you pray, don’t pour out a flood of empty words, as the Gentiles do. They think that by saying many words, they’ll be heard.”

Prayer Is Relationship, Not Ritual

Prayer is not about informing God; He already knows. It is not about persuading God; He already loves. Prayer is about alignment, not argument.

Matthew 6:8 CEB
“Don’t be like them, because your Father knows what you need before you ask.”

Jesus dismantles the idea that prayer works because of repetition, volume, or eloquence.

God Is Already Listening

One of the most liberating truths of prayer is this: God does not need to be alerted. He is attentive.

Prayer is not about getting God’s attention; it is about giving Him ours.

At Felix Harcourt Ministries, we emphasize that prayer flows best when we remember who God is and who we are in Him.

The Lord’s Prayer: A Framework, Not a Formula

Immediately after warning against empty words, Jesus gives what we call The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13). It begins with:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.”

Prayer starts with a relationship, not requests.

  • “Your kingdom come” — we pray forward, aligning with God’s agenda.
  • “Your will be done” — prayer is submission, not control.
  • “Give us today…” — daily dependence, not anxiety.
  • “Forgive us…” — prayer purifies the heart.
  • “Deliver us…” — prayer acknowledges spiritual realities.

Prayer Transforms the One Who Prays

The ultimate goal of prayer is not getting what we want, but becoming who God wants us to be.

2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV
“We are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory.”

Prayer reshapes desires, purifies motives, and renews perspective.

3. When Ye Give: Giving That Flows from Love, Not Recognition

Matthew 6:3 CEB
“But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”

Giving Is a Kingdom Expectation

Once again, Jesus says “when you give,” not “if.” Giving is not merely financial; it reflects the nature of God.

John 3:16 NIV
“For God so loved the world that he gave…”

God is a giver. When we give, we express His nature.

The Heart Behind Giving Matters

Jesus addresses giving in the context of motive. The problem is not generosity; it is public display.

In biblical times, some would announce their giving to be admired. Jesus rejects this completely.

Faithful giving is quiet, intentional, and God-focused.

Giving Is an Act of Trust

Giving tests what we trust most: money or God.

Proverbs 3:9 NIV
“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops.”

Giving is not loss; it is worship.

God Rewards What Is Done in Secret

Jesus repeats a powerful phrase throughout Matthew 6:

“Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

God’s rewards are never shallow. They are lasting, eternal, and transformative.

Luke 6:38 NIV
“Give, and it will be given to you… For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

The Common Thread: The Father Who Sees in Secret

Fasting, prayer, and giving all share one theme: God values the secret place.

  • Fasting trains the heart.
  • Prayer aligns the will.
  • Giving reveals trust.

None of these is about visibility. All of them are about intimacy with the Father.

At Felix Harcourt Ministries, we teach that spiritual depth is cultivated in private, but its fruit is seen in public living.

Note this:

Jesus calls us away from religious performance and into authentic Kingdom life. When fasting humbles us, when prayer aligns us, and when giving flows from love, our spirituality becomes real rather than religious.

Matthew 6:33 NIV
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Pray this:

Father, teach us to fast with sincerity, pray with understanding, and give with joyful hearts. Deliver us from performance-based spirituality and draw us into a deep, authentic relationship with You. May our lives reflect Your Kingdom, not our ego. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
